6. Education and Training

Last update: 28 March 2025

In Cyprus, education is compulsory up to the age of 15 and is provided free of charge. The country faces challenges in keeping young people in formal education, with a high rate of early school leavers (10.40%) that remains above the EU average of 9.50% and the Europe 2030 national target of less than 9%. To address this issue, the Cyprus Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MESY) has implemented  several initiatives to downsize the phenomenon (see section 6.3).

The National Youth Strategy 2017-2022 is the first specialized policy document with policies and actions on youth related topics, such as Education and Training, validation of non-formal education, social inclusion of young people to education and many more (see section 6.4 and section 6.5). With the completion of the 1st National Youth Strategy, the 2nd National Youth Strategy 2030 is under development, aiming at promoting the well-being of young people. There are also several ongoing initiatives/programmes to boost innovation skills and media literacy among young people in both formal and non-formal settings. However, there is no specific strategy/action plan addressing these topics (section 6.7 and section 6.8).
